چکیده
In this tutorial we show the practical applicability of the algorithm described in the paper by Diaconis & Sturmfels (1998) who apply the algebraic theory of toric ideals to define a Markov Chain Monte Carlo method for sampling from conditional distributions, through the notion of Markov basis. For some basic concepts from Computational Commutative Algebra, such as polynomial ideal, term-ordering and Gröbner basis, we refer to Kreuzer & Robbiano (2000). Fundamental references for the applications of Commutative Algebra to Probability and Statistics for finite sample spaces are Pistone et al. (2001a), Chapter 6, and Pistone et al. (2001b). For the theory of log-linear models, we can refer to Fienberg (1980) and Agresti (2002). Let X be a finite set and let px = P[x] = φ(T (x)) x ∈ X , (1)

Maximum Entropy in the framework of Algebraic Statistics: A First Step
Algebraic statistics is a recently evolving field, where one would treat statistical models as algebraic objects and thereby use tools from computational commutative algebra and algebraic geometry in the analysis and computation of statistical models. In this approach, calculation of parameters of statistical models amounts to solving set of polynomial equations in several variables, for which ...
متن کاملLog-Linear Models, Toric Varieties, and Their Markov Bases
My goal in this chapter of lecture notes is to introduce the class of loglinear models and study them from the algebraic perspective. There are at least three different ways to introduce log-linear models: in statistics they are also called discrete exponential families and in algebraic geometry they are known as toric varieties. Our goal is to introduce these models from all three perspective ...

متن کاملToric statistical models: parametric and binomial representations
Toric models have been recently introduced in the analysis of statistical models for categorical data. The main improvement with respect to classical log-linear models is shown to be a simple representation of structural zeros. In this paper we analyze the geometry of toric models, showing that a toric model is the disjoint union of a number of log-linearmodels.Moreover, we discuss the connecti...
